US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle expressed condolences following the deaths of two firefighters who were killed while battling a wildfire on the southern island of Crete.
“My heart is with the people of Greece today following the tragic loss of two firefighters who gave their lives while courageously battling a wildfire near Rethymno, Crete,” Guilfoyle wrote in a post on X on Wednesday.
She extended her “deepest condolences” to the firefighters’ families, colleagues, loved ones and the Fire Service.
“We honor the extraordinary courage of those who each day put themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow citizens as well as millions of travelers from America and around the world who visit Greece,” she said.
