Court awards R250,000 to Limpopo dentist in defamation case over vulgar insult.
A Limpopo High Court judge awarded a dentist R250,000 in damages after finding that a colleague's vulgar workplace insult defamed her, rejecting her claim for R3 million but holding that the offensive remarks seriously harmed her dignity and professional reputation.
The judgment, delivered by Deputy Judge President Matsaro Violet Semenya in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou, follows an earlier ruling in which the court found that statements made by fellow dentist Dr Maluleke were defamatory.
The latest proceedings focused solely on determining the amount of compensation the plaintiff, Dr Seopa, should receive.
The court heard that both dentists were employed by the Limpopo Department of Health and worked at Nkhensani Hospital in Giyani when the incident occurred in February 2020.
