Monsoon preparedness work and civic infrastructure development project implementation have been affected because of a ban on limited tenders in the city, said Chennai Mayor R. Priya.Monsoon preparednessSpeaking at the Chennai Corporation council meeting on Wednesday, Ms. Priya said councillors have demanded that the civic body expedite work ahead of the onset of the Northeast monsoon.Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumaar also said the ban on limited tenders has affected several development works of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).He cited a limited tender with a plan and cost estimate published by the GCC on June 25, 2026, for the refurbishment of a building in Sarma Nagar in the Perambur Assembly constituency, represented by Chief Minister Vijay, and said: “I do not claim this to be wrong. But the rules that apply to the Chief Minister must be applicable to all.”“Considering the traffic congestion across the city, several flyover projects were announced. Now, the tenders for these projects have been cancelled. These are not emergency works. But if the tenders are cancelled, project implementation will be set back and commuters will be affected,” he said.Limited tender processHe added that works valued at a minimum of ₹20 lakh should be permitted under the limited tender process instead of being floated as open tenders.Responding to this, GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said a circular issued on June 10, 2026, laid down the procedure for handling tenders.He added that Government Order no. 262, dated December 6, 2025, also specified the procedure for low-value procurement, and that these procedures would be followed.
