Irish musician Glen Hansard, who won a Best Original Song Oscar and was lead singer for rock group The Frames, has died in a motorcycle crash, aged 56.He was best known for the small-budget film Once, which became a global hit — along with its breakout song Falling Slowly.Newstalk Radio and the Irish Independent reported that Hansard died in the crash, west of Dublin.In a statement ot the ABC, ATC Management "with broken hearts" confirmed Hansard's death."We are still dealing with the shock of it all, so we kindly ask that the privacy of Glen's family, colleagues and friends is respected at this difficult time," a spokesperson said.Glen Hansard was the frontman of The Frames. (Reuters: Stephan Savoia/Pool)The artist combined a love of acting and music.He played a member of a Dublin soul band in 1991 movie The Commitments and won an Oscar in 2008 for the Falling Slowly from the film Once, which he starred alongside Markéta Irglová.Two films are widely regarded as gems of Irish cinema, especially Once, which was later adapted into a Broadway musical.That adaptation then took home eight gongs at the 2012 Tony Awards.The 2007 indie movie portrays the dramatised love story of the Irish and Czech-Icelandic duo, who broke up in 2009."The friendship and connection that you're watching on screen between Glen and I exists, and it did grow into a deeper love afterwards," Irglová said at the time of filming.The film was notoriously small-budget, made on two handi-cams and costing just $US150,000 ($215,000).With Irglová, the pair also formed The Swell Season, touring to international success.Tributes from Bruce Springsteen, BonoA modern fixture of Irish folk/rock, Hansard was met with tributes from those he had played alongside, including stars like Bono and Bruce Springsteen.Bono gave a particularly heartfelt ode to the "most musical and mischievous archangel of Ballymun"."Of all the grand and gigantic venues he and The Frames played, you sensed the street was his most favoured place to perform. RIP Glen."Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin also said he was "deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Glen Hansard"."A talented musician and actor who made a significant contribution to Ireland's cultural landscape over many years," Mr Martin posted on X.A fixture of Dublin's busking sceneBut long before he was an international star, he was a fixture of Dublin's busking scene from age 13.Born in Ballymun, Dublin, he was first encouraged to sing in public by his headmaster, as he told NPR."Once I discovered Bob Dylan, my life took a very interesting and kind of poetic turn," he added.In 1990, he formed rock band The Frames and became its long-serving frontman.He also released solo albums including Didn't He Ramble, which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2016.For years, Hansard led the Christmas Eve charity busk outside Dublin's Gaiety Theatre, where members of the public gathered to see famous Irish musicians perform in aid of the Dublin Simon Community.In tribute to Hansard, Irish buskers took to the streets while fans set up a makeshift memorial in Dublin's Grafton Street — an area synonymous with the late musician.Sometimes uncomfortable with fame, Hansard relished being a father to son Christy."For 52 years I was the most important person in my own life, and then suddenly I got a complete perspective shift," he said of fatherhood in 2023.Wires/ABC
