Mississauga became one of the first municipalities in Canada to put a moratorium on AI data centres after council voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve a pause of up to one year and potentially two.
The move will prohibit building “major digital infrastructure facilities” for up to one year while staff study concerns related to data centres, which are booming as demand for AI and cloud computing spikes. Staff also have the option of extending the moratorium for an extra year if they need more time.
