Authorities have confirmed that a third firefighter died Wednesday during efforts to contain majot blazes in several parts of Greece.

A Fire Service statement said that the man was found unconscious outside the perimeter of a wildfire near Ageranos in the Gytheio region of the southeastern Peloponnese. It said he was pronounced dead in hospital, but provided no information on the cause of death.

The statement voiced “deep sorrow” at the death.

Another two firefighters were trapped in the flames and killed battling a huge wildfire in the Rethymno region of the southern island of Crete.
