The Principal District and Sessions Court in Thoothukudi on Wednesday adjourned to Thursday the hearing of a bail plea filed by Vilathikulam DMK MLA G.V. Markandayan, who is in judicial custody after being arrested in a case for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.The case was registered against the MLA under three sections by the Thoothukudi District Crime Branch police for making the remarks against the Chief Minister during the party’s public meeting to thank the voters held in Kovilpatti on July 18.Mr. Markandayan was arrested on July 20 and remanded in the central prison in Palayamkottai.Subsequently on July 22, a court in Thoothukudi dismissed the bail petition of Mr. Markandayan and rejected the police’s plea seeking his custody.Meanwhile, Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan on July 28 reserved order on the plea by the MLA Markandayan to set aside this judicial remand order and to grant him bail in the case.Following this, the bail petition filed before the Principal District and Sessions Court came up for hearing before Judge S. Subadevi. During the hearing the court sought certain clarifications regarding the petition pending before the Madras High Court and adjourned the bail hearing to Thursday.
