In its latest survey on the January nationwide protests and the 39-day war, the Group for Analyzing and Measuring Attitudes in Iran (Gamaan) reported that approximately 25 per cent of Iran’s literate population aged 15 and above, equivalent to nearly 14 million people, participated in the protests. According to the report, around 50 per cent stated that they did not participate, while approximately 25 per cent preferred not to answer the question.
The survey was conducted between June 20 and June 27, 2026, in collaboration with the anti-censorship tools Psiphon, Lantern, and MahsaNet. It was based on a sample of 31,450 respondents inside Iran, with the results weighted to align with the demographic characteristics of the literate population aged 15 and above. Gamaan researchers stated that the margin of error for these results was approximately 3 percentage points.
Motivations and Public Stance on the Crackdown
According to the report’s findings, the primary motivation cited by participants for joining the protests was “dissatisfaction with the Islamic Republic,” at 71 per cent. This was followed by “high prices, inflation, and corruption,” at 62 per cent, and “Reza Pahlavi’s call to protest,” at 55 per cent. Furthermore, 19 per cent cited “solidarity with bazaar strikes,” and 10 per cent cited “Donald Trump’s support for protesters” as influential factors in their participation.
