MANILA, Philippines — Nationwide stakeholder consultations led by the Department of Education (DepEd) have started discussing a proposed executive order to update guidelines for class and work suspensions and resumptions during emergencies.
According to a DepEd statement issued on Wednesday, the proposed policy will establish a framework governing when in-person classes and onsite work can be suspended in case of environmental and disaster risks — including extreme heat, volcanic smog, heavy rainfall, and earthquakes — and when they can safely resume.
The policy will include automatic suspensions and resumptions triggered by nationally prescribed technical agency thresholds, localized suspensions and resumptions declared by local chief executives (LCEs), and individual school suspensions and resumptions declared based on documented site-specific assessment.
