CHICAGO — With Monday’s trade deadline looming, a question that seemed to have such an obvious answer a month ago seems far less certain for the New York Yankees.Do they really need to trade for that much bullpen help?Maybe not, and part of the reason might have been on display in the Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on Tuesday night.After a vintage performance from Gerrit Cole, who threw six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, they handed the ball to three of their most impressive relievers of late to finish it off.MLB Mailbag: Trade deadline lightning roundAndy McCulloughAngel Chivilli produced a perfect seventh inning, Brent Headrick hurled a shutout eighth, and closer David Bednar got his 22nd save of the season despite giving up a two-run home run with two outs — the first earned runs he has surrendered since May 18.“It’s incredible,” shortstop Anthony Volpe said of the bullpen’s recent performance. “I think just everyone’s stepping up.”That feeling was shared by a pair of high-level Yankees decision-makers who spoke to The Athletic Tuesday and were granted anonymity in exchange for candor.One pointed to the emergence of Headrick and Chivilli as budding crunch-time weapons, not to mention Paul Blackburn’s transition from a starter to reliever.Then there’s the cavalry that appears to be on the way. Both decision-makers highlighted how Clarke Schmidt (Tommy John surgery) and Luis Gil (shoulder inflammation) might become bullpen options by September, and noted that starters Ryan Weathers or Will Warren could transition to the bullpen when Carlos Rodón (elbow inflammation) returns. Manager Aaron Boone also didn’t rule out top pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange (shoulder sprain), who recently started playing catch, pitching again this season. And don’t forget about Bednar’s recent domination, Tuesday notwithstanding.
