WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.V. — Twenty-four hours before New York Giants players, coaches and much of their staff arrive, The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center bustles.Forklifts buzz around the parking lot. Police, team security and staff complete a security walkthrough of the fan section. Other staff are arranging the final pieces of Giants-branded fencing. The fields are chalked, the goalposts set, but instead of a New York City skyline and MetLife Stadium lurking in the background, West Virginia’s picturesque Allegheny Mountains provide the backdrop.Situated within the 11,000-acre Greenbrier Resort, the performance center is already set up to resemble the Giants’ practice facility, with locker nameplates mounted, T-shirts hanging and more gear being added to the personalized cubicles. In the equipment room, every bit and bob that goes into outfitting a football player is neatly organized as the advance crew works into the final 24 hours to prepare the facility for nearly two weeks of NFL training camp.But in the late afternoon, there’s a brief pause to pass out team ball caps to the folks from Clancy Relocation and Logistics, who’ve helped move the Giants from their home base in East Rutherford, N.J. to the mountains of West Virginia for their 12-day stint.“Welcome to the Giants,” says one team staffer to the moving crew, which draws a round of applause.Why the Giants moved their training camp to West VirginiaCharlotte Carroll and Johnny SweetThat squad might not be suiting up for the team’s first practice Wednesday, but they’ve played an instrumental role in helping to make coach John Harbaugh’s first Giants training camp a success.“Our whole goal is when they show up, they can just focus on all the things that they’re great at and that they need to focus on,” Megan Rosburg, assistant to the head coach/defensive assistant and the team’s point person for the excursion to West Virginia, told The Athletic this week.Contrary to some initial rumors, conducting camp away from East Rutherford, N.J., wasn’t Harbaugh’s idea. In fact, the team signed a contract with The Greenbrier last fall, as plans for the West Virginia excursion have been in motion for more than a year due to a major multiyear expansion of the team’s facilities that the Giants announced this week. The recently concluded FIFA World Cup added to the offseason action, with MetLife Stadium hosting a handful of games, including the World Cup final.
