A Year After Cutting Athletics, Sonoma State Brings Back 10 Teams

A year after cutting its athletics program, Sonoma State University will re-establish 10 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II sports teams, the university announced Monday.

Beginning in the 2027–28 academic year, students will be able to participate in women’s basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball, as well as men’s basketball, golf and soccer. The university will also reintroduce men’s cross-country, which hasn’t been offered at Sonoma State in over a decade. It will not bring back baseball or women’s track and field.

NCAA Division II requires member universities to offer at least 10 sports. Sonoma State’s selected teams satisfy Title IX, are fiscally sustainable and the most likely to draw crowds and consistent philanthropic support, according to an athletic FAQ document on the university website.
