Internacional defender Victor Gabriel has been suspended for the time it will take for Cruzeiro forward Gabriel Pec to recover from a serious injury, a Brazil sports court has ruled.Pec, 25, suffered a fractured tibia in his left leg on his Cruzeiro debut following a tackle from Gabriel, 22, during the Brazilian Serie A fixture on July 23. The injury required surgery.The Internacional defender was shown a red card for the challenge, and Brazil’s Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) ruled that his ban from playing should be extended until Pec returns to training. The suspension is capped at 180 days.Gabriel’s challenge 13 minutes into the second half of the fixture at the Estadio Beira-Rio left Pec with a cut on his left leg, and after scans revealed the extent of the injury, charges against Gabriel were filed to the STJD based on the “violence of the play and the severity of the injury”.It was argued that the challenge was “disproportionate and reckless”, and fell under article 254, 3 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD), which states that if an athlete is unable to compete due to “serious violent play” then the individual responsible may remain banned until the injured party returns to training, up to a maximum period of 180 days.
