UK energy regulator Ofgem is to publish a consultation on Wednesday outlining proposals for stiffer rules to stop speculative data centres from overloading the queue for grid connections, Bloomberg reported.
The proposed rules would require data centre projects to provide “significant” fees or other financial guarantees, such as letters of credit, performance bonds or cash deposits, Ofgem told the news service.

Wednesday’s consultation is to include details such as how the fees would be calculated, how they would be administered by the National Energy System Operator, and the circumstances under which projects could lose their place in the queue and the funds they have committed.
