The owner of the Daily Mail is suing Google for allegedly demoting its coverage of the royal family in search results.

In a lawsuit filed in New York, it accused Google of abusing its market power by penalising publishers that fail to channel enough of their advertising business through its platform.

Associated Newspapers, the Mail’s owner, alleged that Google put pressure on publishers by skewing search results in favour of news providers that generate more cash for its ad-sales operation.

Associated Newspapers is a division of the Daily Mail & General Trust, a conglomerate controlled by Lord Rothermere, a descendant of the newspaper’s founder.

The company is suing Google for unspecified damages and wants the tech group to be more transparent in future. The
