July 28 (Asia Today) -- The competitiveness of leading U.S. service academies is fueling calls for South Korea to overhaul its military education system, including proposals to consolidate the country's Army, Navy and Air Force academies.
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., are frequently recognized for their academic programs, engineering education and leadership development.
Their model combines tuition-free undergraduate education, extensive science and engineering coursework and practical leadership experience after graduation.
Supporters of reform say South Korea should adopt a similar approach to reverse declining applicant numbers, rising dropout rates and concerns about the quality of its future officer corps.
