Producers of metals, grains and other raw materials rose as the U.S. dollar slipped against rivals ahead of the Federal Reserve's decision.

"July hold view is a closer call than we expected after soft June inflation," said strategists at brokerage Bank of America Global Research, in a note to clients. "Higher oil raised hike risks. Recent U.S./Iran de-escalation may modestly reduce pressure to hike but upside oil remains an inflation risk."

Gold futures, which are particularly sensitive to rate and foreign-exchange moves, finished just above the psychologically significant $4,000-per-ounce level.
