The renewed commitment was made during a bilateral meeting between Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mahmoud Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, held on Monday.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on strengthening the African Union, advancing institutional reforms, promoting regional peace and accelerating the implementation of Africa’s development agenda.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu commended Youssouf for the progress recorded under his leadership of the Commission, noting that the reforms introduced had contributed to improving the institution’s effectiveness and efficiency.
She reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the Commission’s efforts in implementing the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and achieving the continent’s collective aspirations.
The minister also raised issues relating to Nigeria’s permanent membership of the African Monetary Institute (AMI) mechanism, expressing appreciation for the Commission’s earlier decision on the matter while requesting the issuance of the necessary corrigendum to formally reflect the decision adopted by the AU Assembly and Executive Council.
