Welcome to Dispatch Energy! In my first column for this newsletter last fall, I wrote that the era of the climate hawk is over. That period, between around 2010 and 2022, was defined by low energy costs and interest rates, ascendant progressive and cosmopolitan cultural politics, and relative geopolitical tranquility, all of it culminating in an elite fixation on addressing climate change. As I described, none of these conditions hold anymore: Commodity prices are high, AI is roiling domestic politics, the war in Iran is capturing international attention, and even progressives are reconcentrating their efforts to oppose America’s “oligarchy,” the White House’s aggressive immigration enforcement, and other issues.
One other shift is in America’s posture toward China.
