Some residents of Roxborough, Tobago, are expressing outrage after sections of Prince Bay were reportedly blocked off by individuals claiming ownership of the area.Several villagers told the Express the bay has been used by fishermen and boat owners for more than 50 years as a launching and docking site, and they believe they are now being unfairly denied access to a location that has long served the community.According to the residents, the restrictions have disrupted their daily activities and livelihoods, and they insisted that the area has historically been accessible to the public. They are now calling on the relevant authorities to intervene and clarify the legal status of the land.Some villagers have indicated they are prepared to pursue legal action if necessary in an effort to reclaim access to Prince Bay, maintaining that they will not allow what they describe as a long-standing community resource to be taken away without a fight.“I am not querying that this is private property, what I am saying is if this is private property and because of it being the only port of entry for the boats to come in and to be secured in this Roxborough Prince Bay, you can’t block up the whole bay, Roxborough is a fishing village,” said villager Dianne Frederick who spoke to the Express on Saturday.Meanwhile, Roxborough Village Council president Mikkel Lewis said the blocking of the beach area is of concern to the fisherfolk.“Even self there is a owner, we are saying as a Village Council this is where the boats would dock. Now, we are in the rainy season as well and given that is the case...a tropical storm warning, anything could happen. Now, when this is the case, where the fisherman going to pull up their boats,” Lewis said.Public relations officer of the Roxborough Fisherfolk Association, Brian Daniel, is not ruling out legal action in the matter. “If it comes to that we will go in that direction of taking legal action,” Daniel said.Contractor Curtis Nimblett told the Express while he has been contracted to carry out the fencing of the property, he is hopeful the matter would be resolved.Documents indicating ownership of the land was shown to the Roxborough Village Council on Friday and to the Express.“I hope that sometime in the near future that some negotiation consultation could take place so we could arrive at some amicable solution,” Nimblett said.
