Four illegal Venezuelan immigrants who were among a group of 14 who escaped from the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC) in Aripo earlier this month have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment with hard labour after admitting to escaping lawful custody.The sentences were imposed on Friday by Master Lisa Singh-Phillip in the High Court.Rafi Fawaz Mohammed received the heaviest sentence of 15 months’ imprisonment with hard labour after the court took into consideration that he has an extensive criminal record, including 11 previous convictions, and has seven other matters still pending before the courts.Edinson La Rosa was sentenced to ten months’ imprisonment after the court was told he has five previous convictions. Luis Fermin was ordered to serve nine months’ imprisonment, while Jose Manuel was sentenced to one year.Court records indicated that Manuel also has three pending criminal matters.All four men pleaded guilty to the offence of escaping lawful custody.Their convictions stem from the July 18 escape of 14 detainees from the IDC. The men reportedly breached the security perimeter of the facility before fleeing. The escape triggered a coordinated manhunt involving officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the Immigration Division and other law enforcement agencies. Within days, seven of the fugitives were tracked down and recaptured during intelligence-led operations carried out at several locations in east Trinidad.The other three captured detainees who were also charged in connection with the escape were expected to appear in court yesterday to answer the same offence. They are Francisco Javier Chacon, Manuel Jose Zabala Henriquez and Edinson Maltin Alcala La Rosa.Up to yesterday, the seven other escapees had not been recaptured.
