Housekeeping staff at the largest dementia care unit in the country are to ballot on proposals intended to end a long-running grading and pay dispute that resulted in several days of strike action this month.A further one-day stoppage at St Joseph’s in Shankill, Co Dublin, scheduled for Wednesday, has been called off by Siptu.The union said the move was designed to allow for voting on the proposals which were the product of talks at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) on Tuesday.The dispute involves about 20 staff who say their roles have evolved considerably over a prolonged period to include a significant element of care provision. They wanted to be regraded accordingly.St Joseph’s, which is part of the St John of God group, provides day, respite and residential dementia care.Both sides in the dispute welcomed the developments at the WRC on Tuesday, describing the engagement as “constructive”. No dates were immediately confirmed for the balloting to take place.
