TSMC has started to resume production at its Japanese chip fab after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s Kumamoto prefecture today (July 28).

According to local news outlets, Kikuyo Town, where the Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM) fab is located, recorded a seismic intensity of upper 5.
Per a report from Reuters, TSMC said it had evacuated employees at the facility in accordance with its emergency response procedures, and all workers who had been on site were accounted for. The report added that while construction work taking place at the site was unaffected, TSMC noted it had suspended work to keep employees safe should aftershocks occur.
"Post-earthquake structural inspections have been completed, confirming that the structures are safe and operations are gradually resuming. Detailed inspections and impact assessments are ongoing," the chipmaker said.
