Judge Orders Release Of Key Witness In ICE ShootingA federal judge on Monday ordered the release of a key witness of the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old man who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison gave ICE 48 hours to release Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego, who was in Salgado Araujo’s van with him when the group was chased down and fired upon by ICE officers. Salgado Araujo died as a result of the shooting. The three men in his vehicle with him at the time have all been held in ICE detention since. Rojas Pliego has said in a statement from behind bars that Salgado Araujo was shot despite obeying officers’ orders to stop his van. He also disputed the Department of Homeland Security’s claim that Salgado Araujo posed a threat.DHS has asserted that Salgado Araujo “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer,” though the agency has a history of lying about such claims.Ellison noted in his release order that Rojas Pliego had no criminal history during his decades in the United States. The Trump administration had tried to hold him under its “mandatory detention” policy, but the judge rejected that argument, saying that it violated the Constitution’s Due Process clause in Rojas Pliego’s case. The two other witnesses in Salgado Araujo’s vehicle during the shooting, including his brother, Victor Hugo Salgado Araujo, remain detained, though they’ve similarly sought their release via federal habeas corpus lawsuits.Latest Live Updates‘A Chilling Message’: Ex-FCC Brass Condemn ABC License ReviewA coalition of former top Federal Communications Commission officials have condemned the media regulator for instigating an early review into the licenses of eight local TV stations owned by ABC.FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced the change to the renewal process in May, even though the licenses were not set to start expiring until 2028.The move came amid a series of confrontations between Trump-aligned Carr and one of America’s most prominent broadcast networks, which is owned by Disney. In a filing Tuesday, as reported by The Guardian and Deadline, ex-FCC commissioners and staffers appointed by both Democratic and Republican presidents objected to the “unprecedented” early review, pointing out it was announced a day after ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel made a controversial joke about the president’s age.“Through this proceeding, the FCC seeks to censor Disney’s and ABC’s speech and send a chilling message to all broadcasters: carry speech we don’t like at your peril,” the filing reads. They called for the FCC to end the review.Lindsey Graham's Casket Arrives At U.S. CapitolThe flag-draped casket of the late Sen. During the Biden administration, high-ranking officials in Washington and within the Border Patrol had threatened disciplinary action for the use of the term. See All Updates
