We are clearly in “the year of AI,” with this probably being the #1 topic on people’s lists, at conferences, in commercials, appearing in new company directives and rules, etc. There are some issues that are surfacing from the norms of AI and the widespread use of AI, however, that provide a lot of concern.

One thing AI companies have done to try to stimulate more use of their products, or even addiction to them, is provide a lot of positive reinforcement and flattery to their human masters. However, this provides problems. Even in the best of cases, we shouldn’t get constant positive reinforcement for our ideas and plans. We all have bad ideas at times. We know that a good friend or family member supports us, but also steps in and provides a check against our worst impulses or thoughts. In cases where people really struggle with how to go through life, a sense of reality, or impulsive or reactionary behavior, much more help is needed. AI, unfortunately, has been trained to fan the flames rather than put them out.
