Two major road projects that have been a long-pending demand of Coimbatore’s trade and industry remain on paper without much progress. The Eastern bypass was planned as an extension of the Karur-Coimbatore bypass road project by the National Highways Authority of India. It was later dropped by the NHAI as the entire project was mooted as a toll road and there were oppositions to the project. The Eastern bypass was later reported to be taken up by the Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority that was formed by the previous DMK government. There is, however, no clarity on the status of this project, said sources.Regarding the Western bypass road project, the first phase is completed and the remaining project was also transferred to the Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority.K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the State government should take up the Eastern bypass road project. Regarding the Western bypass road project, land acquisition is almost over for the second phase. It should also be moved to the Highways Department and continued.“Both the roads are important for Coimbatore. Hence, the State government should implement both the projects without any further delay,” he said. Published - July 28, 2026 08:45 pm IST
