A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's Kumamoto prefecture, causing widespread destruction across Kyushu. A considerable number of people are feared dead after part of a shopping mall collapsed, while many others remain trapped. The quake also damaged roads and bridges, derailed a cargo train, cut power to around 45,000 households, and prompted large-scale rescue operations.
