A bipartisan group of U.S. senators announced on Tuesday that they had reached an agreement on long-awaited legislation that would authorize President Donald Trump to impose additional restrictions on major purchasers of Russian energy, as well as expand sanctions on Iran.

A procedural vote on the sanctions bill is scheduled to take place late Tuesday evening.
President Trump has expressed support for the legislation, which had been championed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
According to the text of the bill released earlier this week, the legislation broadens sanctions against Iran and separately targets Russia's oil and gas exports. It would grant the president the authority to impose tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, as well as on five countries that help Russia circumvent energy-related sanctions.
