With the MLB trade deadline approaching, maybe your league will get into the bartering spirit as well. Here are some names you might want to target or offer up in a deal.BuyKyle Tucker, OF, LADOne of the weirder details of this season is that Kyle Tucker suddenly turned into an average hitter (he will, of course, remember that he’s Kyle Tucker when the playoffs start due to annoying Dodgers magic). For the past month, he has actually started to look more like himself as long as you don’t look at the surface stats. In July, his slash line is an ugly .238/.329/.365. He has two homers and no steals in that span. However, his barrel rate is 10.7% in that stretch, compared to 5.8% before, and his expected stats show a more Tucker-esque .319 xBA and .504 xSLG. He also has a good walk rate and fantastic strikeout rate in that period, which both happen to be 11%. Sometimes the numbers take a while to catch up to what the performance says it “should” be, but I think we’ll see the real Tucker before too long.Heriberto Hernández, OF, MIAI’m not sure anyone predicted the breakout of a 26-year-old prospect, already in his third organization, but Hernández has been a beast this year. He’s on pace for a 30-homer, 15-steal season and backing it up with a 13.2% barrel rate and x-stats that are actually a little better than his .242 batting average and .471 slugging rate. The 14.3% swinging-strike rate shows some downside risk, and when he gets around to slumping, it might look pretty rough. Still, it’s hard to argue with what he’s done so far.Pete Alonso, 1B, BALThe Pete Alonso experience is that he oscillates between looking like one of the premier sluggers in the sport and an overpaid mistake hitter. Under the surface, he doesn’t change too much. His barrel rate, exit velocity and launch angle have all stayed in the same slugger range, month to month. Sometimes the homers show up in bunches, and sometimes they don’t. It’s been a sometimes-they-don’t kind of month, but if you need power, he’s still Pete, and his managers might be open to moving him.Griffin Jax, SP, TBJax has been a starter for 67 innings now, so let’s see what we’re working with. His 3.63 ERA splits the difference between his 3.92 FIP and 3.37 xFIP. His 25% K rate and 6.6% BB rate provide a very strong foundation. He has a surprisingly wide arsenal for a former reliever, with four pitches he throws at least 18% of the time, plus the occasional curveball. Stuff+ rates the full arsenal as above average, except for the sinker, which comes in at a still-workable 96 Stuff+. That’s a very solid arm, and one that may improve a little as he tinkers with his approach. Another win for the Rays’ pitching machine.
