The European Union has summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires following the incursion of Russian drones into Romanian airspace and the destruction of Latvia's honorary consulate. The deliberate violation of Romania's airspace by Russia signals a serious escalation.

European Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni made the statement during a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday, according to Ukrinform's correspondent.

"We have today summoned Russian chargé d'affaires in the EEAS and this as part of our response to Russian drones flying over Romanian airspace and the destruction of Latvia's honorary consulate," the spokesperson said.

He noted that the EU had expressed its "strong condemnation" of the deliberate violation of Romanian airspace by Russian drones.

"This reckless act signals a serious escalation by Russia and threatens the security of EU citizens, regional stability, and international peace," El Anouni said. He added that Romania and Latvia could count on the European Union's full solidarity and support.
