Uganda has formally declared an end to its most recent Ebola epidemic, with the country’s Health Minister saying the nation is now free of the deadly virus after completing the mandated monitoring period without any new cases.
The outbreak, which began in mid-May, infected 20 individuals and killed two before health officials were able to limit it through monitoring, contact tracing, and treatment procedures.
"Throughout this period, the Ministry of Health maintained intensive surveillance nationwide , and no new Ebola cases have been detected," Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi said.
While Uganda has contained the epidemic, the adjacent Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is still dealing with a far greater Ebola catastrophe.
Of the 20 infections linked to Uganda's most recent epidemic, 15 were related to cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, underscoring the disease's close cross-border nature, as seen on Reuters.
