NewsUK NewsKFCAnimal rights campaigners propose to transform a vacant former KFC in Fleetwood, Lancashire, into a "Chicken Empathy Museum", complete with slaughterhouse exhibits, vegan food and mascot chicken11:12, 28 Jul 2026A former KFC could swap fried chicken for feathers under an unusual new proposal from animal rights campaigners.‌People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wants to transform the vacant takeaway in Fleetwood, Lancashire, into a “Chicken Empathy Museum” and has written to Landwood Property Auctions to ask whether the building’s owner would consider lending or donating the Lord Street site for educational use. The proposal comes after the former restaurant was put up for sale with a guide price of £100,000.‌Dawn Carr, PETA’s vice-president of vegan projects, said: “Turning a former KFC into a Chicken Empathy Museum would give this site a new purpose, one that encourages visitors to see chickens as the clever, curious individuals they are. PETA would be delighted to help transform a place once linked to suffering into one that inspires compassion.”‌If the charity gets its way, the former takeaway would be transformed into an attraction exploring chickens’ intelligence, emotions and social behaviour, alongside exhibits displaying equipment used in commercial poultry slaughterhouses, including kill cones and shackles. Visitors would also be able to meet PETA’s chicken mascot and sample vegan food.‌The animal rights organisation used the proposal as an opportunity to highlight its concerns within the poultry industry, claiming chickens are often kept in crowded sheds and selectively bred to grow rapidly before many develop health problems ahead of slaughter.Ms Carr said: “Most people know chickens only as ‘nuggets’, ‘wings’, or ‘fillets’, yet these remarkable birds are intelligent, inquisitive individuals with their own unique personalities.“They can recognise dozens of other chickens, communicate through a sophisticated range of vocalisations and even perform basic arithmetic. Mother hens talk to their chicks before they hatch and the chicks begin communicating back from inside the egg."Article continues belowNeither the property’s owner nor Landwood Property Auctions had publicly responded to the proposal at the time of writing.Choose Daily Mirror as a 'Preferred Source' on Google News for quick access to the news you value.‌KFCPeople for the Ethical Treatment of AnimalsBBCChickenMuseums
