He was Bill Belichick's first hire after taking over as the head coach in Chapel Hill.This is a bad look for the program and Belichick, especially given Lombardi's contract reflects that of a general manager of a top-flight program. One, North Carolina is not remotely close to that caliber of a football program. Secondly, the Tar Heels were beyond inept in 2025, as the roster and coaching staff were out of their depth.North Carolina's activity in the transfer portal has been impressive this offseason, but we have yet to see whether these additions will produce worthwhile success this upcoming season. This screams doomsday for the Tar Heels' 2026 season, as the vibes were overall stronger than last year. The Tar Heels' dysfunction has always been a concern, but those doubts were somewhat hushed heading into this season.Belichick's future at North Carolina has already been in doubt among many in the media, and now, it feels increasingly inevitable that the Tar Heels will be searching for a new head coach in the next couple of years. It would not be a surprise if the 74-year-old head coach is let go after this season, and North Carolina cleans house and creates a new regime ahead of the 2027 season.The vibes have not been overly exciting for the Tar Heels, but it has felt like they are slightly moving in the right direction. This is a major setback for the program, and one that could ultimately derail this upcoming season before it even starts. This is yet another off-field distraction that will hinder on-field performance.
