Trade deadline week is an exciting time on the annual baseball calendar, and I love engaging with our readers. This weekend, we opened up the mailbox for questions and I want to thank everyone who submitted one. Although I can’t get to all of them, I’ve tried my best to answer most of the questions we received.Note: Submitted questions have been edited for clarity.Is it really worth it for the Phillies to be all-in this year at the deadline? The roster is getting old and the farm system is almost barren. Could they take a one year “pause,” trade a Zack Wheeler/Jhoan Duran and get some major-league ready type prospects back, save a little money this year, get to a lower tax threshold, and buck up for next season? (Work stoppage depending.) — Brian S.It’s a great question, but I believe the Phillies owe it to Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, Zack Wheeler, Jesús Luzardo and Cristopher Sánchez to make one last push at the deadline. They do have a team that can be a threat in a short playoff series because of the players I just listed. If it doesn’t work out, then a rebuild in the offseason should be on the table for the reasons you listed.The Bucs need some bullpen help. (Pirates GM Ben) Cherington has to be feeling the heat on coming into the season with that glaring weakness. What is the likelihood that he massively overpays for (Mason) Miller in an attempt to keep his job? Considering the cost, would (Luke) Weaver be a more realistic option? — Jacob G.Ben is prioritizing run prevention at this trade deadline and has told opposing GMs that his goal is to improve the bullpen and defense. In terms of Miller, the Pirates are not in play for him, however, Cherington does have interest in all of the available Mets relievers, and that includes Weaver, who would be a great fit.(Adrian) Morejon, (Wandy) Peralta and (Luis) Campusano to Pittsburgh. What’s the return? — Dan M.That would be a game-changing trade for the Pirates and the cost would be enormous. I’ll say it will take a package of something like Murf Gray, Axiel Plaz and Levi Sterling to get that trio.If the Red Sox were to eat the entire remainder of Francisco Lindor’s contract, how much prospect capital would they need to surrender? What does the package look like if the Mets eat half of the contract? All of it? — Julian B.The Red Sox are not engaged in trying to acquire Lindor. Instead, they have pursued CJ Abrams, Zach Neto and Jeremy Peña. Lindor’s contract and age are too much of an issue for Boston to pursue him at this trade deadline.Have the Red Sox improved enough with the addition of Curtis Mead, or are there more moves to be made? (Rafael Suanes / Imagn Images)Do you think the Red Sox will make any more moves? — Rob S.They already made a huge move in landing Curtis Mead from the Nationals for Connelly Early and I’m told they’re now working hard to get another bat, hopefully an upgrade at shortstop. Not sure but my guess is they have at least one more move left to make.Which one of the AL Central teams that are still in contention do you think surprises the most with moves at the deadline if they sell or buy? — Will K.I think the Tigers will surprise us the most, regardless of which direction they decide between buying and selling. There are a lot of different opinions on whether they should hold or trade both Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, so some large group is bound to be surprised whatever direction they go.
