The City of Johannesburg has referred 13 alleged financial misconduct cases involving about R4.07 billion to its independent Disciplinary Board for investigation.
This follows allegations of unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure across various municipal departments.
The City said the referrals are part of its efforts to strengthen accountability and ensure that allegations of financial misconduct are investigated in line with the Municipal Finance Management Act.
The City said that the referral "enables the independent Disciplinary Board to conduct preliminary investigations to determine whether the allegations are founded and whether further investigations, disciplinary proceedings, criminal proceedings or any other appropriate action should be recommended".
