Moonshot founder Yang Zhilin trained in America but returned to Beijing to build Kimi K3, joining a growing flow of Chinese researchers leaving the US as China develops a powerful AI talent pipeline of its ownLast week, Beijing-based artificial intelligence company Moonshot launched Kimi K3, a large language model that experts immediately ranked alongside the most advanced and highly regarded models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. Even Elon Musk called it “impressive work.”The Chinese achievement would have attracted less attention were it not for the driving force behind the company, its energetic 34-year-old founder Yang Zhilin, a rock music enthusiast who received his higher education in the United States. The young Chinese researcher was quickly identified as a major talent in Silicon Valley. Apple pursued him intensively, Google and Meta rolled out the red carpet, and postdoctoral positions awaited him at Stanford and MIT. But he chose none of them. Contrary to the usual path, he preferred to return to China.How did the mighty United States, the land of unlimited opportunity and the source of dreams and ambitions for tens of thousands of outstanding young Chinese, Indian and Israeli professionals, lose its next major talent so easily?One theory was that Yang had been deterred by stricter immigration policies and growing suspicions in the United States of Chinese industrial espionage. But people close to him said his greatest dream had always been to establish his own artificial intelligence company in China. He repeatedly told them that if he failed to do so, he would regret it for the rest of his life.Apple even offered Yang a senior position at the company’s Beijing offices, which would have allowed him to return home while also enjoying a dream job. But Yang, as he had planned from the outset, chose instead to fulfill his ambition. He named the company Moonshot, inspired by his favorite Pink Floyd album, The Dark Side of the Moon.The meeting rooms at the company’s headquarters in Beijing’s Haidian district are named after rock bands, and a white piano stands at the center of the office. Many of the researchers Yang recruited had studied with him at Tsinghua University in China, where he completed his undergraduate degree.One of them is Zhou Xinyu, who used to organize campus music competitions with him. Yang himself played drums in the student band Splay.That was the beginning of a journey that reached its peak last week with the launch of the K3 model. The release sparked panic in the West over the growing capabilities of Chinese artificial intelligence, similar to the reaction caused by the launch of DeepSeek last year.Within three years of the company’s founding, Yang’s 300-member team created an AI model capable of competing with the best in the world.It did not happen immediately. Many in China’s artificial intelligence industry believed Moonshot would not survive the brutal and expensive race to build large language models.In 2024, the startup earned only $2.4 million, while the costs of training models and recruiting researchers soared. Yang decided to abandon the development of a chatbot and, in another decisive move, committed to offering his model as open source.Moonshot AI The results soon followed. Moonshot is now one of China’s fastest-growing model providers, with annual revenue reaching about $300 million in June.The British Financial Times, which has examined the phenomenon, says China’s emerging artificial intelligence ecosystem is becoming increasingly attractive to Chinese talent and entrepreneurs, and Yang is not the only one deciding to return home.Prominent examples include Dr. Harry Shum, who served as chief researcher and executive vice president of Microsoft’s artificial intelligence and research group. He returned to China after a distinguished career at the top of the American technology industry and was appointed chairman of the International Digital Economy Academy in Shenzhen.Professor Qi Lu, who served as a senior vice president at Yahoo and later as a senior vice president at Microsoft, returned to China in 2017 to become president and chief operating officer of technology giant Baidu.Professor Song Chun Zhu, one of the world’s leading figures in computer vision, returned to Beijing in 2020. He now heads the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence and leads Chinese research into the futuristic field of artificial general intelligence. The list goes on.Historically, most Chinese students in science, mathematics and technology chose to remain in the United States after completing their doctorates and joined the prestigious research laboratories of major technology companies. But a Stanford survey conducted in 2024 among 1,304 Chinese American scientists found that 73% felt “unsafe” as academic researchers, while 65% cited concerns surrounding “anti-Asian hatred and violence.”Studying in the US, then returning to China (Photo: shutterstock)According to the Financial Times, Chinese founders with similar backgrounds said they now feel more comfortable establishing startups in China, both because of their extensive personal networks there and because of their familiarity with the local culture.Some also point to China’s clearer regulatory framework and its large talent pool. Many speak of patriotism and feel that their contribution to the development of artificial intelligence in China will help their homeland lead the global technological revolution.The debate surrounding Yang’s departure has developed into a broader concern in the United States over the retention of artificial intelligence talent.This week, Silicon Valley even heard a proposal to grant an automatic green card to every foreign resident who earns a doctorate in artificial intelligence, in an effort to persuade them to remain in the United States.China is no longer merely importing talent trained by the United States. It is already succeeding in producing that talent itself. Stanford’s Hoover Institution tracked 356 researchers behind DeepSeek’s main models and found that 53.5% had never studied or worked outside China. Among those with experience in the United States, 70% ultimately returned to China.For decades, America’s technological dominance was based on a simple formula: attract the world’s brightest minds and nurture them at home. Yang Zhilin’s story suggests that this approach is now being tested, not only because the United States has become less welcoming, but because China has become more attractive.The question is not whether Yang made the right decision. The question is what America’s future will look like if its power of attraction continues to fade.
