Tokyo, July 28 (Jiji Press)--Japanese stocks came under heavy selling pressure Tuesday morning, with the benchmark Nikkei average losing more than 2,600 points. The index of 225 selected issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Prime section stood at 62,307.83 at 9:32 a.m., down 2,623.36 points, or 4.04 pct, from Monday. The tailspin came after U.S. stocks related to artificial intelligence and semiconductors were sold Monday amid growing concerns about overinvestment in AI infrastructure, market sources said. Among major losers were chipmaking equipment maker Advantest and technology investor SoftBank Group. Meanwhile, some defensives, such as railway operator JR East and Chugai Pharmaceutical, attracted buying interest, an official at a midsize securities firm said. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
