SAN FERNANDO, BUKIDNON, Philippines — The municipal government had asked the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for permission to recover and repurpose premium hardwood trees, some estimated to be up to 100 years old, that were uprooted by a massive landslide earlier this month.
The request came as DENR personnel and local officials began inventorying the recovered timber to prevent it from being illegally harvested or transported by timber poachers and unauthorized chainsaw operators.
An initial assessment by the DENR–Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Valencia City and the San Fernando Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office documented large logs measuring 60 to 80 centimeters in diameter.
