Isaiah Vazquez / Getty ImagesJuly 27, 2026 3:20 pm EDT Updated Connor Onion will succeed Jason Benetti as Fox Sports’ No. 2 college football play-by-play announcer, teaming with analyst Robert Griffin III, sources told The Athletic on condition of anonymity because the deal has not yet been publicly announced.Benetti moved on to NBC, where he is its lead MLB broadcaster and is expected to call college football and basketball.Fox Sports declined comment.Onion has called games for Fox and the Big 10 Network. Fox’s No. 1 college football team remains Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt.
Last season, Griffin joined Fox Sports as a game analyst after being fired by ESPN. Benetti helped steer Griffin’s second act in broadcasting. After retiring from the NFL, Griffin impressed ESPN and Fox in tryouts. He chose ESPN, but after a quick rise, he fizzled out in Bristol.When Benetti’s move to NBC became official, Griffin wrote that Benetti had earned the new role, adding that he made Griffin better showing “the sports world that a booth doesn’t have to sacrifice knowledge for entertainment.”Now, it is Onion’s turn to make it work.
