A new volume documenting the old houses and neighborhoods of Katerini brings together photography and fiction to trace the city’s historical path, while highlighting the people and communities that shaped it.
Titled “Familiar Voices: The Old Homes and Buildings of Katerini,” the book, an initiative of amateur photographer Thanos Kosyvas and published by the nonprofit Friends of the Katerini City Museum, pairs black-and-white images with stories by local writers.
Kosyvas said the idea was to invite authors and residents who love writing to create narratives inspired by old homes in each neighborhood.
The result, he said, captures lived experience and the city’s human geography, a mosaic of Vlachs, Sarakatsani, Pontians, Asia Minor refugees, Thracians and locals.
Supported by a citizens’ movement advocating a city museum, the publication uses photographs and texts to strengthen local identity.
