Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) office released a new statement Monday, 43 days after he was first admitted to the hospital, saying he is not “medically cleared” to leave the rehab facility yet. “I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders. Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to make it to Fancy Farm, Kentucky this Saturday,” McConnell said in Monday’s statement.Along with the statement, McConnell’s office released a photo of the senator and his wife, Elaine Chao. At the time, his office did not explain why. Almost a month later, on July 12, McConnell’s office released a photo of McConnell and his wife, along with a statement from McConnell, in which he said he was admitted to the hospital because of a fall in June. The fall left him “briefly unconscious,” he said, and while in the hospital, he had a “mild case of pneumonia.” He said he had moved to a rehab center. It’s been 43 days since McConnell was admitted to the hospital in June. In Monday’s statement, the Office of the Attending Physician of Congress said McConnell is continuing his recovery from the June fall in a rehab facility. “OAP physicians visit with the Senator every day, discussing all aspects of his rehabilitation care,” the office said. “Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls. His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.”June was the second time McConnell was admitted to the hospital this year. In February, he checked himself into the hospital for “flu-like symptoms” “in an abundance of caution,” his spokesperson said at the time. In 2023, McConnell fell at a Washington hotel and froze mid-sentence twice during news conferences. McConnell said in the statement Monday that “there’s no place” he’d rather be than at the Fancy Farm event, an annual church fundraiser for St. Jerome Catholic Church that includes barbecue and speeches from politicians. “When I first attended forty-two years ago, Fancy Farm was a pretty lonely place to be a Republican,” McConnell said. “But, my, how times have changed. Today, western Kentucky is a conservative Republican sea of red. So I hate that I’ll miss the fun this year, but I’m sending my best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful picnic.”He added: “As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon.”
