Ahmad al-Sharaa, President of Syria, announced in an interview with Al Jazeera on Monday, July 27, that Damascus, with the involvement of several nations, is working to reach a security agreement with Israel.
Al-Sharaa expressed hope that such an agreement could pave the way for a “comprehensive peace” without compromising “Syria’s rights over the Golan Heights.”
The Syrian President also warned that any descent into chaos in Lebanon would have immediate and direct consequences for Syria, adding that the expansion of the U.S.–Israeli war against Iran could have serious repercussions for the entire region.
Emphasising that Damascus has no intention of intervening militarily in Lebanon, he noted that Syrian officials are in discussions with the Lebanese government on ways to assist the country in emerging from its crisis. Al-Sharaa further stated that Syria is seeking to enlist international support to encourage Israel to adopt a “more balanced” policy while simultaneously seeking to avoid entering into a military conflict with the country.
In another part of the interview with Al Jazeera, he voiced support for centralising control over arms and decisions concerning war and peace strictly under the Lebanese state, effectively endorsing the disarmament of Hezbollah.
