Anis Ahmed has been elected as the chairman of Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) with effect from today.Prior to his election as chairman, Anis served as a member of the bank’s executive committee and, earlier, as the chairman of the risk management committee.He is the founder and group chief executive officer of MGH Group, a Singapore-based multinational conglomerate operating in 26 countries.The group’s diverse global portfolio includes supply chain solutions for major fast-fashion, e-commerce, automotive, and electronics brands; private container terminals; Bangladesh’s first foreign joint venture airline, scheduled to launch in 2026; distributorship of airline global distribution systems; logistics; food and beverage retail; and financial services.A founder of the bootstrapped startups Obhai, a ride-sharing platform; Waadaa.Insure, an insurtech company; and Jatra, an accommodation aggregation platform, Ahmed has actively supported Bangladeshi innovation and technology-driven enterprises over the past decade.According to Anis, “Today EBL has entered a new era of banking where the board will actively facilitate the ascension of women-led senior leadership, digital transformation, and the evolution of EBL into a daily lifestyle brand for our customers, built on the bank's rock-solid financial strengths.”Ahmed’s gratitude for the July Revolution resulted in the immediate extension of support to 268 July Freedom Fighters through Suhana and the Anis Ahmed Foundation.
