West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday appealed to migrant workers to return home, assuring that the government would ensure employment opportunities within the State, which is witnessing emergence of numerous industrial opportunities.“I appeal to migrant workers to come back. The State is witnessing the emergence of numerous industrial opportunities. There are also several projects being implemented jointly by the State and the Central government,” Adhikari told newspersons in Jalpaiguri in North Bengal.The Chief Minister said Amul will establish an ice cream manufacturing plant on 15 acres of land in North Bengal. Twelve tea gardens are expected to reopen within the next two months.“No government welfare scheme will be discontinued in a way that causes hardship to the public. Those who are not covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme will receive benefits under the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme. Distribution of Ayushman Bharat cards will begin from August 16, and all eligible beneficiaries will receive benefits under the Annapurna Yojana by August 30. No ordinary citizen will face any hardship,” Adhikari added.Notably, earlier this month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed the Bhoomi Pujan for the World’s largest curd production plant under the Amul Bengal Dairy Project at Sankrail in Howrah district.The ₹700-crore Amul Bengal Dairy Project will process around 30 lakh litres of milk and produce 10 lakh kilograms of curd and other cultured dairy products per day. More than 1.25 lakh milk-producing farmers in West Bengal, including over 30,000 women milk producers, are expected to benefit from the project. Amul has plans to set up two more plants in the State-- one each in both North and South Bengal--to produce ice cream.attract investmentsThe State government will acquire land for industries and infrastructure projects to attract investments in Bengal.Speaking at an event organised by industry body MCCI last week, Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta said the land banks which are there in the State are not going to be enough to be able to satisfy all the different types of demands the Government has already got.“We will acquire land. We’ve taken that decision. We will acquire land on behalf of industry, on behalf of infrastructure projects. That is a policy which will meet a certain type of political resistance, and we should be prepared for that. So these are very hard decisions,” Dasgupta added.Published on July 27, 2026
