Residents of Pethampalayam near Perundurai have urged the district administration not to permit the proposed stone quarry and stone crushing unit in their village, citing concerns over its impact on agriculture, groundwater and the environment.In a petition submitted to the district administration during the weekly grievances redress meeting on Monday (July 27, 2026), the villagers said they had earlier opposed the project through a representation submitted on May 26, 2025. The petition, signed by over 100 residents from more than 50 families, had resulted in the proposed works being kept in abeyance for some time. However, the residents said they had now learnt that efforts were under way to revive the project.According to the petition, over 20 borewells supplying water for agricultural lands are located around the proposed quarry site. The villagers said quarrying and stone crushing activities would affect groundwater resources, agriculture and the environment. They also pointed out that about five villages are situated in the vicinity of the proposed site.Seeking the Collector’s intervention, the residents requested the district administration to reject permission for the quarry and stone crushing unit and protect the livelihoods of people dependent on agriculture.
