Cynthia Erivo takes on the role of Miriam Makeba in "The Road Home".

“The weapon was the music.”

It is a simple sentence, but it carries the weight of a time when music became a way for South African voices to travel beyond borders that tried to keep them unheard.

That idea sits at the centre of "The Road Home", the upcoming feature film bringing the story behind Paul Simon’s iconic "Graceland" album and the South African musicians who helped create its unforgettable sound to the world.

During a visit to the Cape Town set, that phrase was repeated by the filmmakers, writers and producers behind the project because, for them, the music was never just something playing in the background.
