Swimmer Adam Peaty became emotional as he revealed how fatherhood has changed his outlook after addressing the ongoing family rift11:55, 27 Jul 2026Updated 11:56, 27 Jul 2026Adam Peaty said he's on the 'war path' ahead of his Commonwealth Games final tonight. It has been a rollercoaster weekend for the 31-year-old swimmer, who broke down in tears on Saturday after claiming the bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke final of the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, insisting that no one knew the “s**t” he’s been through.Although his parents weren’t in the crowd, pregnant wife Holly Ramsay was there to embrace him after the race - while his mum, Caroline, shared a social media post insisting they were “supporting him from afar” amid their ongoing family feud.‌Ahead of the 50m breaststroke final tonight, he said fatherhood had made him more "emotional" in a candid interview, as he gave an insight into his preparations.Speaking to fellow athlete Laura Kenny after the semi-final on Sunday, he was questioned: “How do you come back from how you felt yesterday, to get back in that pool today and do what you’ve just gone and done in the semi?”“You're making me emotional again. It's what it's like being parents,” he replied. “I think for me, people congratulate me [for] doing the heats. I'm like, what for? It's just my job.“But actually I think sometimes we do forget, and sometimes we do forget the importance of sport. For me, just showing up this morning and doing a job, that was just the process.“And then tonight was a little bit different. I added a little bit of a layer on top of that. But to get from this morning to tonight was actually a post-mortem.‌“I wrote it on a piece of paper: ‘What am I doing well? What am I doing wrong? What can I change? What can't I change?’ That's the real world. As soon as I had that, I could build a little bit of a path, a little bit of a war path.”Adam, who is set to become a dad for the second time, added: “Yes, we lost the battle yesterday. Yes, it hurt a lot.“But actually that was because of the expectation I put on myself when really I'm just at the start of this new canvas of being - in December - a father of two, an athlete going to my fourth Olympic Games, this stuff gets harder and harder as we go on.‌“A lot of people don't understand that, and that's not their fault. I want to give them insight into that, but this either makes us or breaks us unfortunately.”The former Strictly Come Dancing star - who will next compete in the 50m breaststroke final later today - has been faced with intense scrutiny over his personal life in recent months, after his mum was not invited to Holly’s hen do, or their wedding.‌While he had remained tight-lipped about the family rift, he choked up during an interview on Saturday, after his bronze medal win.“It’s hard because I know how hard I work. I know the s**t I’ve been through, which is no fault of my own, but it does take its toll,” he said at the time.“I’m not crying because it’s bronze instead of gold. I’m crying because I know I am better than that. I feel like I couldn’t have put any more in and that’s where it hurts, because I’m like ‘what’s the point of all the metres every day, what’s the point of being exhausted all the time’?‌“‘What’s the point of having to say no to family events so you can go to training’? It has to mean something and for me it has to be human excellence and that is not excellence for me. So that’s the emotion that is unfortunately coming out.”Caroline has since posted about her son’s latest success on social media, penning: "We continue to support Adam from afar. He's our son who we love, whom we supported to reach his aspirations.“Our love, our time, our sacrifices were given freely with no expectation of financial reward just genuinely given with the love as any mother and father would do for their child.”"We are strong, we love and are always there for each other,” she added. "The very nature of our strength as a family has helped us move past the nastiness, the lies that have been told about us.”Like this story?
