Lithuanian construction company YIT Lietuva has won a 29-million-euro contract to build a Leopard 2A8 tank assembly and repair facility in the Kaunas Free Economic Zone, the company said Monday.
YIT Lietuva and Lithuania Defence Services signed the agreement for the project, which will create a 13,000-square-meter plant to support the assembly and maintenance of Leopard 2A8 tanks and other heavy military equipment for the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
Lithuania Defence Services is a joint venture between Germany’s KNDS Deutschland and Rheinmetall Landsysteme.
“This project is significant not only for our company but for all of Lithuania. It will contribute to strengthening the country’s defence infrastructure and play an important role in ensuring the technical readiness of the Lithuanian military in the future,” YIT Lietuva CEO Kęstutis Vanagas said.
Sebastian Dietz, CEO of Lithuania Defence Services, said the facility would provide long-term maintenance capabilities for heavy military equipment. The company will be responsible for tank assembly, technical servicing, repairs and ensuring the combat readiness of equipment in Lithuania.
