MANILA, Philippines – Agricultural insurance payouts reached P19 billion over the past four years, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said, as the government moves to expand protection for farmers and fisherfolk facing losses from diseases and other unexpected events.
In his fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona), Marcos cited avian flu and African swine fever (ASF) among the diseases threatening agricultural livelihoods and said the Department of Agriculture (DA) would ensure that farmers are equipped with updated knowledge and practices to prevent and combat them.
“Various pests and diseases also threaten to undermine the expected gains in agricultural production. These include avian flu and ASF. That is why the DA will ensure that farmers are equipped with modern knowledge and best practices to prevent and combat these diseases,” Marcos said.
He also highlighted agricultural insurance as protection against losses arising from unexpected damage or destruction.
