The heads of the ACTU will step down this year after almost a decade representing the union movement, making way for a new generation of leaders to deal with artificial intelligence, the rise of the far right and the decline in living standards due to inflation.

ACTU secretary Sally McManus, who last year suffered sudden hearing loss in one ear, will resign at the end of August and president Michele O’Neil will stay on until later this year to assist in the transition.
